Before Booking Your Coil Fitting

Before a coil fitting appointment, you should have a consultation with a clinician to discuss whether an intrauterine device (IUD) or intrauterine system (IUS) is the right contraceptive option for you.

A sexual health screening may also be recommended before your fitting. If you have a new sexual partner after your screening but before your appointment, please let the clinician know.

A coil can often be fitted at various points during your menstrual cycle, provided there is no possibility of pregnancy.

Current Contraception

Your fitting arrangements may depend on the contraception you currently use:

Hormonal Contraception

If you are using contraception such as the pill, patch, vaginal ring, injection or implant correctly and it remains effective, a coil can usually be fitted at a convenient time.

Condoms

If condoms have been used consistently and correctly since your last period, a coil fitting can generally be arranged at any suitable time.

If There Is a Risk of Pregnancy

If you are not using contraception regularly, are relying on less effective methods, or your current contraception has expired, you may need to avoid unprotected sex before the fitting appointment. Your clinician will advise on the safest approach and may discuss temporary contraception options before your coil is fitted.

Coil Replacements

If you are having an existing IUD or IUS replaced, specific advice may be given about avoiding unprotected sex before your appointment to reduce the risk of pregnancy.

Preparing for Your Appointment

To help your appointment run smoothly, please:

  • Make a note of the first day of your last menstrual period.
  • Eat something before attending.
  • Consider taking suitable pain relief beforehand if appropriate for you.
  • Bring sanitary pads, as light bleeding or spotting can occur after fitting.
  • If possible, arrange for someone to accompany you home in case you experience cramping or feel light-headed afterwards.

Children at Appointments

The fitting procedure usually requires privacy and concentration. If you need to bring children with you, please arrange for another responsible adult to supervise them during the appointment where possible.

What Happens During a Coil Fitting?

A clinician will explain the procedure and answer any questions before starting.

During the fitting:

  1. A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina.
  2. The cervix is assessed.
  3. The coil is passed through the cervix and placed inside the womb.

The procedure is similar to a cervical screening examination and may cause some discomfort or cramping. Experiences vary from person to person.

You can ask the clinician to stop the procedure at any time if you feel uncomfortable or decide you do not wish to continue.

After the Fitting

Following insertion, you will be given advice about:

  • What symptoms to expect.
  • Managing discomfort or bleeding.
  • When to seek medical advice.
  • Any follow-up appointments that may be recommended.

Important Information

Although coil fittings are commonly performed and highly effective, there are occasions when a fitting may not be possible. If this happens, your clinician will explain the reasons and discuss alternative options with you.
